Your Boycott of the ‘Star Wars’ Blu-Rays Worked! Oh, Wait, No, It Didn’t at All

When George Lucas announced the fancy Blu-ray roll-out of his "Star Wars" movies, fans got really excited until they realized how many alterations were being made to the six films. OK, there weren't that many alterations, really, but some people get pretty annoyed about, say, a digital Yoda. We're "Star Wars" fans, too -- OK, maybe just the original trilogy -- but we do get amused at other people's fury at these sorts of things, even organizing online boycotts to teach Lucas a lesson. Well, the first week sales for the set have just been unveiled, and ... sorry, "Star Wars" purists, it looks like the Empire won.

The nine-disc set (and still they didn't have room for the "Star Wars" Christmas special) brought in $84 million worldwide. Perhaps more importantly, it's now the best-selling and most pre-ordered Blu-ray ever -- and it did that in a week.

Of course, those who refused to give Lucas (even) more of their money do have a silver lining of sorts: Just think how much more the set would have earned if Lucas hadn't alienated a portion of his fan base with his digital tinkering. Oh well, let's just enjoy the trailer for the original "Star Wars." We haven't seen this in forever, and we'd forgotten how incredibly earnest it is. That "story of a boy, a girl and a universe" line always kills us.
